The world of work is constantly evolving, with technological advancements, shifting employee expectations, and widening skills gaps presenting constant challenges. People professionals are at the forefront of tackling these issues – ensuring teams are equipped, engaged, and ready for the future.
To help you make informed decisions and shape impactful strategies, this month we’ve focused on a range of topics linked to workplace skills and productivity.
As your professional body, we make sure we stay on top of the employment law landscape to give you the confidence and know-how to keep your workplace fair, inclusive and compliant. We’re continually updating our knowledge hub to ensure you have all information you need at your fingertips. Here’s a summary of what’s new this month:
We published our Autumn 2024 Labour Market Outlook (LMO) this month, based on a survey of more than 2,000 UK-based employers. This quarterly report is full of insightful predictions for the UK labour market, with analysis of employers’ recruitment, redundancy and pay plans combined with our unique insights on key topics.
With Ireland’s auto-enrolment retirement savings scheme set to launch in September 2025, we hosted a webinar to share more information with our members. We were joined by Liam Connellan, partner and head of the pensions team at ByrneWallace LLP, who talked through the differences between auto-enrolment and pensions schemes. Liam also shared key considerations and actions for employers to help them successfully prepare for the change.
Do mothers, particularly those with young children, face disadvantages when it comes to job quality? Our experts have analysed a recent study into this very topic based on several years of research. Researchers used different methods to explore the job quality of working mothers and fathers compared with those without children. Read our report to understand the role people professionals can play and the practical steps we can take to promote and ensure a consistent level of job quality for all.
Drug and alcohol use issues affect more people than we might expect. But just 30% of UK organisations provide guidelines for managers on how to deal with incidents and how to signpost employees to support services.
Our guides, for both managers and people professionals, provide advice on how to manage specific incidents and effectively support those struggling with drug or alcohol problems. We also share guidance on the preventative steps organisations can take to make sure work isn’t part of the problem.
Our research shows that less than 30% of UK employers train all interviewers on inclusive interview practices. No one is immune to bias and recruitment processes should be designed to ensure the most suitable candidate is always selected for a role. Clear, objective, structured, and transparent processes are fairer for candidates and support employers to attract more diverse talent pools.
Our inclusive recruitment guides contain practical, evidence-based actions to make the recruitment process more inclusive. We’ve also got a range of regularly updated recruitment factsheets to give you everything you need to operate fair and effective processes.
