The world of work never stands still, and with extensive plans for reform on the horizon, it’s even more important for people professionals to stay ahead of the curve. As your professional body, we’re here to help you understand current and future trends by sharing the latest insights and advice, helping you create a people experience that delivers the right outcomes for your organisation. Here’s a recap of the resources we’ve shared this month to keep your finger on the pulse.

Representing the voice of the profession in government consultations

Over the past nine months, the CIPD’s team of public policy experts has represented the views and insights of the people profession in government consultations, roundtables, tripartite meetings with government, trade unions and employer organisations, and meetings with ministers, MPs and civil servants.

The people profession is uniquely placed to advise government on the feasibility of proposed reforms, from the perspective of both workers and business. And we’re proud to represent HR, L&D and OD professionals from organisations of all sectors and sizes, to ensure the reforms deliver the right outcomes for all.

This month, we took part in an important roundtable with the UK’s Secretary of State Liz Kendall, linked to the publication of the latest phase of the Keep Britain Working Review.

We also shared a closer look at the progress of some of the other reforms and strategies the government is putting in place to boost job creation and skills development.

Keeping you up to date with changing employment law in the UK

As your professional body, we’re constantly reviewing the employment law landscape and updating our knowledge hub to ensure you have all the right information at your fingertips. Here’s a snapshot of what’s new this month:

Five years on from COVID: The role of the people profession has never been greater

Five years since the UK’s first COVID-19 lock down, our research shows that the pandemic has had a lasting impact on the world of work, with many employers still adapting.  And at our the CIPD’s Scottish Annual Conference this month, our chief executive Peter Cheese explained why the role, scope and value of the people profession is always growing.

Can HR and reward professionals unlock more value from employer pensions?

In the private sector, defined contribution (DC) pension schemes are the most common types of pensions. These are where a person’s retirement income depends on factors such as stock market performance and the amount of money contributed. To improve outcomes for pension members and the economy, the UK Government has called for consolidation in the DC market and commissioned a review.

Recent CIPD data found that HR and payroll teams are responsible for the DC plan in 68% of workplaces. But what can HR and reward professionals do to increase pension value? Our industry experts have considered this question and several others in analysis published this month.

New: how to retain a productive workforce

Organisations operate most effectively when turnover is low. Retention strategies help reduce the cost and impact of people leaving. HR professionals play a key role in understanding why employees leave and developing strategies to reduce turnover and increase retention.

This month we published brand new guidance and tools, exclusive to CIPD members, for developing and maintaining an effective retention strategy.

Tackling the gender pay gap in your organisation

Gender pay and pension gaps are still high. While progress has been made in increasing female representation at the top of organisations, there also needs to be more focus on building a strong pipeline of female talent for the future. We’ve updated our assessment of the current situation and shared advice for employers seeking to address the gender pay gap.

Equipping students for success in the ever-changing world of work

The CIPD Student Conference this March attracted record numbers. Nearly 1,200 CIPD members attended on the day, making it our most successful conference ever for aspiring people professionals.

Exclusive to CIPD members, the annual Student Conference is held online to accommodate a global audience. At this year’s event, an impressive line-up of speakers and panel discussions gave valuable insight into the future of work and the evolving role of the profession, while showcasing how CIPD membership supports students throughout their professional journey.
