Latest Labour Market Outlook: avoid knee-jerk reaction and plan long-term

The CIPD’s quarterly Labour Market Outlook is one of the most authoritative employment indicators in the UK. It provides forward-looking analysis of employers’ recruitment, redundancy and pay intentions to help HR professionals and employers plan and prepare.

This quarter, the report received widespread media coverage after highlighting plummeting employment confidence and the highest rise in organisations expecting to make redundancies in a decade (excluding the COVID-19 pandemic). Our advice to people professionals is to avoid knee-jerk reactions and take a long-term approach to workforce planning and skills and technology investment. Read the full report to find out more.

What can big data tell us about retention, pay and progression?

To give people professionals insight into how effective organisations are at driving workforce mobility and opportunity, we’ve published our take on a new scorecard that ranks 150 of the UK’s largest employers based on retention, pay, mobility and access to opportunity.

Importantly, the scorecard supports employers and people professionals to make comparisons by occupation and by company. By looking at a similar sized company as a benchmark against your own, you can identify specific areas for improvement.

We also updated two related factsheets this month to help you understand more about both reward and people analytics.

Recruiting, managing and developing people with a disability or health condition

There are around 9.5 million people of working age with a disability in the UK. Yet only 5.1 million of them are in work. This represents a huge pool of untapped talent which businesses can’t afford to ignore.

In partnership with Disability Confident, we’ve developed guidance for managers on employing people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. The quick and easily digestible guide provides useful information and practical advice covering recruitment, line management and continuing professional development.

Unlock your career potential with Chartered Membership

Does your CIPD membership grade reflect your knowledge, abilities and impact in your workplace? If not, you could be missing out.

There are several ways to achieve Chartered Membership and ensure your grade demonstrates your true skills, experience, career potential and professional credibility to colleagues, clients and employers. We ran a special webinar this month to explore the benefits of gaining Chartered membership and the different routes you can take.

Hiring and supporting refugees in the workplace

Hiring and supporting refugees in employment is a crucial part of social and economic integration. Organisations that do so also benefit from the skills, experience and knowledge of refugees, helping them address talent shortages and gaps in the labour market.

We’ve published a guide to hiring refugees full of practical recommendations and information on recruitment and retention for organisations of any size.

Creating and supporting healthy workplaces

Our research suggests that most organisations are increasing their focus on health and wellbeing and supporting people in a wide-ranging way. But to fully realise the benefits of a healthy workplace, organisations should learn more about the common issues facing workers that are leading to long and short-term absences. Using the latest data and insights, organisations can boost the mental and physical wellbeing of their workforce to create a healthier and more productive workplace.

In partnership with Simplyhealth, we’ve published a new infographic to help you understand some of the key challenges and build the knowledge you need to create and support a healthy workplace.
