Stay up to date with planned changes in Northern Ireland employment law
Northern Ireland’s Good Jobs Employment Rights Bill was proposed in July 2024. The planned bill has the objective of improving employment rights and promoting good work. The Department for the Economy's measures for the planned bill include addressing matters such as the rights of those on zero and low hours contracts, worker status, flexible working and a right to disconnect.
The content below details the measures that the Department for the Economy is seeking to implement. These proposed measures will need primary and secondary legislation, codes of practice and guidance to bring them into force.
CIPD members can log in below to see the measures. The table contains a short summary of the measures and the further information below provides advice for practitioners on how to prepare ahead of any potential change.
Practitioners should note that while the Good Jobs Employment Rights Bill (the Good Jobs Bill) is similarly named to Great Britain's (GB) Employment Rights Bill, the Good Jobs proposals are not yet in legislative form. The Good Jobs Bill is being developed on a similar timeline to the GB Employment Rights Bill; some measures are similar, some are different, and some proposals in the NI Bill are already in force in GB.
