Delivered by the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, in partnership with People Management magazine, the awards are the most prestigious in the industry, celebrating outstanding achievement in people management and learning development, and the valuable contribution that HR and L&D professionals make to the overall success of an organisation.

The awards were divided into 19 categories and were open to all types of organisation, regardless of size or sector. Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust were crowned category winners of the best employee engagement initiative and overall winners for their campaign to improve patient safety and experience at Wexham Park Hospital. The campaign was launched to tackle insufficiencies in organisational culture, performance management and elements of employee behaviour at Wexham Park. Frimley Health initiated a programme of clear and well-structured HR-led interventions that spanned a wide range of areas, from culture and leadership to reward and customer service. The judges agreed that the project was a great example of extremely ambitious and comprehensive organisational transformation, reflected in the CQC’s rating of Wexham Park Hospital changing from ‘inadequate’ to ‘outstanding’ earlier in the year.

Commenting on the awards, Peter Cheese, Chief Executive at the CIPD, said: “As we celebrated a remarkable twenty years of the CIPD People Management Awards last night, it’s clear that the variety and creativity that organisations present every year has only grown over time. 2016 has been a year of great change, and it’s fantastic to see HR teams stepping up to new challenges and being so innovative in their approaches to people management and development that are having a lasting impact on businesses.

“All of our winners should be very proud of what they have achieved and their much deserved recognition across a wide range of categories. As the overall winner, Frimley Health’s HR initiative was literally lifesaving, was remarkably well executed and has been a key part of improving the rating and performance of the hospital. With the number of challenges currently facing the NHS, they should be extremely proud of this project, and hopefully with this recognition similar ideas can be extended across other areas of the health service. We congratulate them and all of our other winners.”
