The CIPD is delighted to announce the winners of the Professor Ian Beardwell Prize for 2024, which recognises outstanding applied research in HR. The prize, named in memory of the respected HR academic Ian Beardwell, celebrates research that makes a significant impact on HR and people development.

This year, the award goes to Professor Uwe Jirjahn, Dr Marie-Christine Laible, and Professor Jens Mohrenweiser for their paper, “Management Practices and Productivity: Does Employee Representation Play a Moderating Role?”

"We are thrilled to receive the 2024 Professor Ian Beardwell Prize. Our research combines scientific rigor with practical relevance and shows that trustful, cooperative employment relations and strong employee representation are key to making HR-management effective and supporting organisational success."

Professor Uwe Jirjahn, Dr Marie-Christine Laible, and Professor Jens Mohrenweiser

Their research explores how employee representation and collaborative relationships between employees and management can enhance productivity and improve HR practices.

The Professor Ian Beardwell Prize was set up in memory of leading HR academic Ian Beardwell, following his untimely death in 2002. The prize is given for the best applied research paper and comes with a £1,000 award.

“Professor Ian Beardwell made a huge impact on our profession by connecting research with practice. This year’s winning paper continues this legacy, exploring important topics for the people profession. We are proud to recognise this research in Ian’s name.”
