The CIPD has today announced the appointment of Neil Carberry as its next Chief Executive, as we prepare to lead the profession through a new era of work shaped by rapid advances in technology and AI. He will take up the role on 28 September 2026.

Neil joins from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), where he has been Chief Executive since 2018. He previously led the CBI’s work on labour market, skills and employment relations, and brings more than 25 years’ experience across the HR and employment field. He is currently Chair of the CBI’s Trade Association Council and has held a number of influential public roles, including serving on the Council of ACAS and as a member of the Low Pay Commission. He was awarded an OBE in 2025 for services to business and the economy.

His appointment follows the announcement in November 2025 that Peter Cheese will retire after 14 years as CIPD Chief Executive.

Commenting on the appointment, CIPD Chair Professor Chris Bones said:

“We are entering a new era of work. Technology, and particularly AI, is driving the most significant transformation in work since the industrial age. This demands new thinking, new approaches and new leadership to improve organisational productivity and performance through better people management.

“Neil brings a wealth of experience as a CEO in both the HR and membership sectors, alongside deep expertise in public policy and strong relationships across business and government. His insight into the future of work makes him well placed to lead the CIPD into its next chapter."

“I’d like to thank Peter once again for his leadership and contribution. Peter has led the CIPD through a period of major growth and transformation, including expanding our international presence and supporting the profession through COVID-19.”

Neil Carberry says:

“I’m excited by the CIPD’s ability to drive positive change across economies and workplaces. Many of the biggest challenges we face come back to people, productivity and performance, and these will only become more important as job markets evolve with new technology.

“Building on its proud heritage and professional expertise, the CIPD will continue to support people professionals to deliver real impact in their organisations and demonstrate the vital role of effective people practice in driving growth and opportunity.”

Peter Cheese will step down on 30 June 2026. Caroline Stockmann, CIPD Board member and Treasurer, will serve as interim Chief Executive until Neil takes up the role. Caroline was Chief Executive of the Association of Corporate Treasurers until 2023 and has held senior finance, commercial and strategic roles across both not-for-profit and commercial organisations in the UK and internationally.
