The CIPD has worked with a diverse range of people to define principles for the people profession, which can guide good HR and workplace decisions. Those principles represent the profession’s fundamental beliefs – who they are and what they stand for. They’ve been developed over a number of years, through research and discussions with CIPD members, business leaders, the wider HR community, educators and policy-makers.

The principles will now be embedded into a new Professional Standards Framework, which will set out the knowledge and behaviours that people professionals will need to champion better work and working lives in all they do. Those standards will be an international benchmark, and will go beyond defining unique expertise to represent the many aspects of being a professional, such as integrity, character and lifelong commitment to development. They’re intended to be a source of strength behind HR and L&D practitioners – supporting them to make confident choices, developing them throughout their careers and inspiring them for the future.

The CIPD is passionate about giving everyone who’s interested in HR and people development, no matter where in the world they live and work, the opportunity to have their say on the development of this new Professional Standards Framework. A series of online discussion forums are inviting feedback on questions like:

  • What kind of support will you need to uphold our principles in your daily work?
  • How do you balance the needs of all your stakeholders – from workers to shareholders to the organisation itself? And what challenges do you face?
  • What do you do to ensure people have a meaningful voice in matters that affect them?
  • What impact do you make as a people professional?
  • What knowledge and behaviours will you need to put professional principles into practice?
