CIPD research found that only one in four employers recruiting young people think they are well-prepared for the workplace. It is critical that young people can demonstrate and develop ‘employability’ skills – such as teamwork, presenting and problem solving - when entering the workplace, and that they are supported to develop these skills throughout their working lives.

Offering work experience opportunities not only gives young people the chance to develop some of these skills, but also creates a positive impression of the organisation to potential recruits in the future – vital at a time when many employers are facing increased competition for young workers.

This guide offers practical advice for employers on good recruitment and selection practices for work experience. It also provides information on supporting and giving feedback to young people during their placements. It also highlights the benefits of work experience.
