We respond to the government’s consultation on Making Work Pay: Strengthening Statutory Sick Pay.

For several years, we have championed the need for effective statutory sick pay (SSP), and we welcome the three reforms set out in the Employment Rights Bill. This consultation specifically focuses on determining an appropriate percentage of the earnings that should be paid to employees earning below the lower earnings limit.

We respond to this question in our consultation response, and explore the further reforms we believe are needed for SSP, including improving the flat rate, making SSP more flexible, and improving support for small and micro businesses.
