Welcome to our branch

Thank you for visiting the Gloucestershire branch page — a very warm welcome to you all. Although Gloucestershire is one of the smaller branches in the CIPD network, we are very proud that it is also one of the most active.
My name is Laura Mathews, a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD. I am the Co-Chair of the Gloucestershire committee. I have worked in the People Profession for 25 years in various industries, from Engineering to Banking. One of my passions is working with forward-looking individuals.

Our committee members are working hard to ensure that our events are topical, interesting and informative. We also welcome offers from members and other professionals to come and speak to our community on their expert subjects.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
We look forward to welcoming you to one of our events soon.

Get involved

We want to see the branch continue to stretch the standard for people management in Gloucestershire.

One of the best ways to truly benefit from your membership investment is to be involved in branch events. You’ll be able to network and meet lots of new and like-minded people that are passionate about our profession. The branch holds a series of events throughout the year, from focused one-hour sessions on employment law 'hot topics' to practical skills development for training practitioners. We aim to offer a programme that appeals to a range of interests across HR and L&D throughout Gloucestershire.

As a branch, we are committed to creating more opportunities for membership involvement, engaging with employers and organisations locally on the back of national CIPD initiatives, giving you the events that you want and ensuring value from your membership.

We also represent local issues and interests in response to CIPD issues and government consultations, giving Gloucestershire members a direct influence on both how our institute develops and on wider public policy.

This means listening to your needs and responding to them. After all, this is your branch, and our single focus is to serve you. Please let us know what we can focus on to support you more, and if you are interested in volunteering on our branch committee.

Networking and learning

With workshops, round tables, panel discussions and expert speakers, our thought-provoking events cover everything our community needs. Network, learn and stay up to date.

Volunteering

Keen to get involved, give back or raise your profile? Whatever your skills and interests, learn more about branch volunteering.

Support for student members

Just starting out on your career? Want to meet experienced people professionals and keep up to date with all the topics you cover in your studies? We’re here for you as you study for your CIPD qualification.

The Alan Murgatroyd Award

The Alan Murgatroyd Award was set up to commemorate the life of a very active CIPD member who was a key driver in developing the Gloucestershire branch. Alan also taught on CIPD programmes and his major interest was that of students, their progression, their successes and their involvement in their professional body. In this respect the award, made to an outstanding local student member of the CIPD each year, commemorates the support that Alan personally provided to students during his life.

Member to member mentoring

The CIPD member to member mentoring programme connects People Professionals to help you develop your skills, learn from one another and progress within your career.
Whether you are looking for a mentor, want to share your expertise as a mentor or perhaps both, it has never been easier with our online platform.

Want to get involved? Got an idea for an event? We want to hear from you!

Join one of our special interest groups

Our special interest groups are all about bringing together people professionals who share the same passions, to connect, swap ideas, and learn from each other.
This autumn (2025), we are excited to launch two brand-new groups. Get in touch to find out more, and let us know what other special interest groups you’d like to see in the future.

HR forum

The HR forum is designed for people who work at a strategic level within the profession. Membership is either by invitation or HR Directors may apply to the forum chair to request involvement. There are no formal entry requirements, but applicants must demonstrate current or very recent evidence of their work at a strategic level. This includes HR Directors, HR consultants and professionals in other disciplines who are decision-makers influencing their organisation’s senior management team on HR strategic issues. Membership of the HR forum is open to both CIPD members and non-members who operate at this level.

The HR forum typically meets four times a year and has an active email discussion group. Topics for discussion are typically generated from within the group and are of current or strategic interest.

For more information about the HR forum or to request membership, please contact us.

Independents group

The independents' group is a forum for CIPD members who are working independently or as a consultant delivering HR and related services. The group allows members to share their experiences, identify common issues and develop links.

There are no set criteria for membership so please feel free to come along.

For more information about the Independents' group, please contact us.

Gloucestershire learning and development (GL&D)

GL&D is for those interested in learning and development and training. It is for practitioners working within organisations or for those running their own L&D businesses.

Through the themes of 'Learn, Share and Discover' the events throughout the year will aim to introduce new L&D topics, exchange thoughts and views on activities and resources, and unlock new creative approaches to learning.

Meetings are arranged on a quarterly basis.

For more information & to receive email alerts about future GL&D events please contact us.
