A new three-year degree apprenticeship will open a fresh route into the HR profession, giving people the chance to earn a qualification while gaining real workplace experience.
The CIPD has partnered with the National College of Ireland (NCI) to develop Ireland's first Human Resources Apprenticeship. The programme has now been approved by the National Apprenticeship Office to move to the development stage.
The Level 8 degree apprenticeship will run over three years and combine academic study with hands-on work experience. It aims to build the next generation of HR professionals at a time when the world of work is changing fast.
To reach this stage, the CIPD and NCI had to show both strong industry demand and employer commitment to the programme. More than 25 organisations have already pledged their support, spanning public services, healthcare and life sciences, technology, financial services, energy and utilities, construction, engineering, retail and professional services.
Ireland's first HR apprenticeship creates a more inclusive route into the profession, allowing people to develop practical skills and earn a recognised qualification at the same time.
The next step is to bring together an industry-led consortium to design the curriculum and set the occupational standards. Employers from across Ireland will work alongside the CIPD, NCI and other key stakeholders to make sure the apprenticeship reflects what the profession needs now and in the future.

The level of employer backing already secured shows strong demand for a structured route into HR. With support from organisations across more than nine sectors, the apprenticeship is designed to serve a broad range of workplaces.
Subject to QQI approval timelines, employers will be invited to register interest from 2027, with the first cohort of apprentices expected to start in September 2028.

The programme is now moving into curriculum development, led by an industry consortium. If you are an employer interested in taking part, expressions of interest are expected to open in 2027.
