Beyond the hype: What AI adoption means for HR and people practice

About this event

Raising awareness of the adoption of AI and the challenges and opportunities it brings into the workplace and how HR can help.

The session draws on findings from the CIPD’s BridgeAI research with employers and people professionals. We will explore how organisations are currently adopting AI, the opportunities and challenges emerging for jobs, skills and working practices, and the role HR can play in supporting responsible and effective adoption.

The structure of the session:

• what AI adoption currently looks like in UK workplaces, including the gap between experimentation and more strategic integration
• how AI is changing tasks, skills and people management, rather than simply replacing whole jobs
• the risks of poorly managed adoption, including work intensification, skills erosion, weak employee involvement and an excessive focus on short-term efficiency
• the practical role of HR in workforce planning, skills development, job design, governance and employee engagement
• responsible use of AI in recruitment and selection, including transparency, human oversight, bias, data protection and candidate experience
• discussion and breakout groups on what participants are seeing within their own organisations across Scotland and Northern Ireland

Speaker's bio

Lizzie Crowley​​​​

Senior Policy Advisor ‑ Skills

Lizzie is CIPD's Senior Skills Policy Advisor and leads CIPD's research and policy development on the UK skills system. Lizzie is a policy and research professional with over 20 years’ experience in the employment and skills arena, she is experienced in developing high-quality research to inform organisational practice, policy and shape the public debate. Before joining the CIPD in 2016, she led youth labour market research and policy development for The Work Foundation and developed research for public and private sectors. She has published several influential reports on skill policy and youth unemployment and appears regularly on national and regional TV and radio.

Hayfa Mohdzaini

Senior Policy and Practice Adviser, Technology and Analytics, CIPD

Hayfa joined the CIPD in 2020. Hayfa has degrees in computer science and human resources from University of York and University of Warwick respectively.

She started her career in the private sector working in IT and then HR and has been writing for the HR community since 2012. Previously she worked for another membership organisation (UCEA) where she expanded the range of pay and workforce benchmarking data available to the higher education HR community.

She is interested in how the people profession can contribute to good work through technology and has written several publications on our behalf, as well as judging our people management awards, speaking at conferences and exhibitions and providing commentary to the media on the subjects of people and technology.
