The session: Domestic abuse awareness in the workplace training has been developed with employers and employees in mind.

The session challenges some of the myths around domestic abuse, the causes, discusses the impact of the 2021 statutory guidance, employer obligations, proposals for reform and looks at what organisations can do/are doing to safeguard their employees.


Delegates will also learn about:

  • The impacts of domestic abuse
  • How to spot signs that a person may be experiencing domestic abuse
  • The complexities of domestic abuse and why it is so difficult to break free from abuse
  • How to respond to disclosures
  • Signposting for support and your boundaries


About the speakers

Marie Allen:

I qualified as a Solicitor in 2003, joining Thompson Smith and Puxon’s Employment team in December 2024.

I am a Senior Associate Solicitor with over 20 years of experience in employment law. I advise employers and individuals on a wide range of workplace issues, including flexible working, sickness absence, redundancy and employee performance. I work closely with HR professionals, corporate clients, public sector bodies, and senior executives, offering practical, tailored solutions.

I also have extensive experience drafting and reviewing contracts, policies and settlement agreements, as well as guiding employees on grievances, appeals, and contractual matters like restrictive covenants. My focus is delivering clear, effective advice to resolve workplace challenges efficiently.

Deb Johnson:

I am the Business & Fundraising Manager and have worked for Lighthouse for just over 10 years.

I deliver training to businesses, agencies and charities to highlight the impact of Domestic Abuse in the Workplace and how to support victims/survivors. I also give talks to community groups around domestic abuse awareness and deliver Suffolk County Council’s DA Champion Training.

As part of my role, I engage with local businesses to encourage, promote fundraising campaigns and to build long lasting partnerships.
