HR can help leaders navigate change by understanding reactions, communication styles & using behavioural science for smoother transitions
Change is the new normal in every organisation, and it’s never been faster, bigger, or more frequent. The challenge is how companies make change as smooth as possible for people, to keep morale and engagement high, and build a culture of adaptability. As the ‘people who are about people’, HR teams have a role to play in helping leaders to navigate and communicate change more effectively.
In this session, you’ll learn about how people respond to change, the different communication personality types that impact how a message is sent and received, and top tips from behavioural science to help make conversations about change more effective.
About the speaker
Mel Loy
Mel Loy is a self-confessed serial ideator, obsessed with how humans behave and what that means for effective communication. She got her start in the world of words by studying journalism, and soon discovered that while she never wanted to be a journalist, she loved learning about the power of communication.
Fast forward 20-plus years, and her resume was stacked with increasingly responsible corporate communication roles across emergency services, construction and mining, early learning, retail and more. In late 2020, after leading her corporate communication team through the COVID-19 pandemic, Mel happily accepted a redundancy and skipped off
towards the horizon, starting her own agency and never looking back.
These days, her small but mighty team at Hey Mel! Communication and Training provides consulting and training services to clients all over Australia and overseas, specialising in internal, change, crisis and strategic communication.
Mel is the author of two books: Change Isn’t Hard: a playbook for practical, people-centred changebcommunication, and Less Chatter, More Matter: the SKILLS to communicate more effectively; and thenhost of the Less Chatter, More Matter podcast. She is also an international award winner for her communication training programs and strategies, a sought-after workshop facilitator and keynote speaker, and certified Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP).
Mel is the Immediate Past President of the IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) Queensland Chapter. Apart from being obsessed with communication, Mel is a qualified yoga teacher, group fitness instructor, and personal trainer, who has been involved in the fitness industry for more than a decade.
