This session will cover the legal definition, legislation and why it matters that employers take steps to mitigate workplace stress.

According to the HSE, stress accounts for the majority of days lost to work-related ill health. This session will cover the legal definition, legislation and why it matters that employers take steps to mitigate workplace stress.

Participants to this session will increase their knowledge and understanding of:

  • The legal definition of stress and psychiatric harm and relevant legislation
  • The employer’s responsibility
  • Common causes where employers go wrong
  • Psychiatric harm: definition, bandwidth on claims for personal injury and constructive dismissal
  • Landmark cases brought for psychiatric harm
  • Identifying potential red flags in your current policies and suggestions to mitigate


Guest speaker: Nour Belal, Specialist Employment Solicitor

Nour Belal is a specialist employment solicitor with extensive experience advising individuals and organisations on complex workplace issues, with a particular focus on equality, mental health, and neurodiversity in the workplace. She has acted in high-value discrimination, whistleblowing, and unfair dismissal claims, and regularly supports clients navigating performance management, capability procedures, and workplace investigations.

As both a legal practitioner and advocate for inclusive workplace culture, Nour combines legal insight with a practical understanding of how neurodivergent individuals experience and respond to stress in employment settings. She has a particular interest in the legal obligations around reasonable adjustments and the proactive steps employers can take to create psychologically safe and neuroinclusive environments.

In this session, Nour draws on her legal practice and lived experience to explore the intersection between neurodiversity and workplace stress offering legal clarity, practical strategies, and a human-centred perspective on fostering more supportive workplaces.
