Guest speaker: Karen Ward

Karen has worked extensively across many sectors on the issue of organisation effectiveness, particularly creating future fit organisations through developing sustainable strategic capability. She has published books on the global aspects of effectiveness – ‘Leading International Teams’ & ‘Globalisation: The internal dynamic’. She is an effective keynote speaker as she brings practical depth and breadth to her contributions.

Karen has worked with Senior HR and OD professionals for over thirty-five years exploring how the HR function can add value through building sustainable organisational performance. She led the Ashridge Business School Strategic HR Programme for many years; worked closely with the CIPD Next Generation HR Research; been Programme Director for the Corporate Research Forum’s research portfolio and collaborated with The Maturity Institute, a leading think tank on the effectiveness of People practices in organisations

Karen has worked extensively with HR teams in the public sector to embed the shift from an administrative policy led function to a more strategic risk-oriented focus. This significantly increases the contribution HR plays in delivering high quality public services.

Specialities

Karen advises a range of organisations on issues related to the effective implementation of sustainable strategic choices. Her work spans two communities within organisations – organisational leaders and line managers on the one hand and change capability practitioners (HR, OD or L&D) on the other. She is particularly interested in the potential of the space between these communities for creating accountable, ethical and healthy places of work.

Experience

In recent years Karen has held interim roles in the NHS, higher education, retail and media sectors. Prior to her interim and consulting career Karen was a Senior Civil Servant working on developing strategic change capability in the UK public sector and prior to that she has held senior leadership roles within organisations in the global pharmaceutical and financial services sectors. She began her career with PA Consulting Group.
