Branch Event - Presentation by Paula Paterson, “The Power of Mindset”
A growth mindset, as defined by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the belief that intelligence, skills, and abilities can be developed through dedication, learning, and effort. In contrast, a fixed mindset assumes these qualities are innate and unchangeable.
Employees who embrace a growth mindset are more likely to seek learning opportunities, engage in problem-solving, and proactively enhance their performance. Beyond individual development, this mindset fosters a culture of continuous improvement, strengthening organisational resilience, agility, and the ability to maintain consistently high performance. For a growth mindset to take hold and become the norm, psychological safety is essential. Employees must feel empowered to speak up - whether to raise concerns, share innovations, admit mistakes, or ask for help - without fear of blame or repercussions. Psychological safety fosters open communication, ensuring that issues are addressed before they escalate, which is particularly critical in high-hazard environments where unspoken concerns can lead to incidents or accidents.
Leaders who demonstrate self-awareness, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills create the conditions for psychological safety to thrive, enabling individuals and teams to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and drive continuous improvement. When a growth mindset, psychological safety, and emotional intelligence are combined, they form the foundation of resilient, high-performing teams that prioritise safety, innovation, and operational excellence.
