HR and Organisational Effectiveness: Supporting Middle Managers
Organised by The CIPD Branch in North Scotland and Islands
Organised by The CIPD Branch in North Scotland and Islands
The third in a three part series exploring how people professionals can help their organisations thrive
In this series of three linked events, we will work with participants to explore and support each other in developing practical approaches, and maximising HR’s role in organisational effectiveness. This will be done through three lenses: culture, change management, and supporting line managers. All are interrelated, and are reflected as themes in the CIPD Working Lives Scotland 2024 Report.
Session 3: Supporting Middle Managers
The “squeezed middle” is a term often used to describe the unenviable position many middle managers find themselves in. This involves trying to balance the needs of their teams and services with the requirements of more senior and executive level leaders.
Often, they are promoted on the basis of their performance as specialists, rather than because they have the skills to manage others. This increases the risk of poor experience and performance through an inability to apply discretion or deal with conflict effectively.
It is in HR’s interests to ensure this cohort are as effective as they can be, because they can impact significantly, both positively and negatively, on the other aspects of organisational effectiveness being explored in this series.
This session will look at how HR professionals can develop and use their skills to support and enable middle managers. It supports the following elements of the CIPD Profession Map:
· Core knowledge – Culture and behaviour
· Core behaviours – Valuing people / Ethical practice
· Specialist knowledge – Talent management
